A RARE Morgan 4/4 vintage car is going under the Charterhouse hammer later this month.

The car, which left the Morgan factory on November 8, 1949, will be part of the classic car auction at Sherborne Castle on July 21.

Auctioneer Matthew Whitney, from Charterhouse's Sherborne salesroom, said: "At Peamore Garage a Standard drop head coupe body was made, rather like you would have your favourite coachbuilder put a body on a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, which was one of three such bodies they made for a Morgan 4/4.”

The first owner of this Morgan, which was registered in July 1950, was City Garages of Exeter. The next owner, Percy Thurburn of Helford, Cornwall, left this car to Frederick Crossley who was one of his employees, when he died in 1959. At this time, the Morgan was maintained by the Tavy Motor Company in Saltash, which was owned by the vendor’s father.

In 1965, the current owner of the Morgan started working on the car in his father’s garage and fell in love with it.

It 8is estimated to sell for between £10,000 and £12,000 at the auction.
