DISCOVER what children did at home and at school during the First World War, with a family open day being held in Wimborne.

The town's Priest House Museum is hosting Your First World War Heritage event from 11am to 3pm on Monday, May 27, when there will be a range of hands-on children's activities to try, as well as displays exploring people who fought in the war, revealing the effects of the war on the home front, including the role of hospitals and nurses in the area.

Advice and guidance will be available to anyone interested in researching a family member’s involvement in the conflict and would like help discovering more.

The short film Tommy’s Sisters, will be screened at various times throughout the day. Produced by State of Play Arts and ScreenPLAY, the film is about life on the home front in East Dorset during 1916, seen through the eyes of four women and a young girl.

The museum is continuing to uncover the stories and experiences behind the photographs and any surviving letters, diaries, postcards, medals or other artefacts that local families have kept. Anyone with information, stories or items that can help build a picture of what the people of East Dorset did during the war is invited to contact the museum on 01202 882533.

This event, part of the museum’s project The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset, is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Admission is free.
