PLANS have been revealed for a £35 million surf park that could be opening in Bournemouth in 2022.

Developers behind The Lagoon claim the attraction would feature Olympic-standard facilities, including a wave machine capable of making over 2,400 ocean-like waves per hour.

As well as surfing, the park would offer a range of other activities including a 700sqm climbing area, an assault course, indoor skydiving, high ropes, indoor caving, archery, scuba diving, an adventure trail, and an escape room.

A number of potential sites, yet to be revealed, are being considered for the park, with a planning application due to be submitted to the council later this year.

The concept was revealed to potential investors at an event in Christchurch last week.

Matt Radford, founder of The Lagoon project, said the park would be a unique attraction and “put Bournemouth on the international map”.

The park would aim to attract over 500,000 visitors each year, including families, businesses and athletes.

“This has been a dream of mine for years, ever since I wanted to teach my kids to surf in a safe and controlled environment,” Matt said.

“Here we are two years later, and my dream is stepping ever closer to becoming a reality.”

A 145-bedroom hotel could be built for visitors to the park, as well as luxury treehouses, woodland lodges, glamping pods and ‘hobbit huts’.

More than 100 jobs could be created if the park goes ahead.

Europe's first artificial surf reef was opened in Boscombe in 2009, however the £3.2 million structure had to close for safety reasons just two years later after its sandbags were damaged.

Director Martin Spooner said The Lagoon company had employed a team of local consultants, who have experience managing sites such as Legoland, Longleat, and Merlin Entertainments, to help develop the project.

“We have just hosted our first private pitch event to attract seed capital and update interested parties, which turned out to be an incredible night for The Lagoon,” he said.

“We are seeking additional founder investors who would like to join us on the journey and a cornerstone investor at this exciting early development stage. Ideally a local entrepreneur from the sports, leisure or hospitality industries.”

Surfing will feature in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo after several attempts for its inclusion were made by the International Surfing Association.
