Kevin Sherwood, 59, suffered an injury to his arm in an incident outside the Broadway pub in Castle Lane West just before 8.30pm on August 8.

Sherwood has now been charged with assisting an offence and dangerous driving.

Prosecutors allege he drove a Mercedes through an enforced stop which was being carried out by armed officers with intent to impede the arrest of Kevin Sherwood junior.

He appeared at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Monday, but has not yet entered pleas to either of the charges against him. The defendant, of Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, is due to appear at Bournemouth Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on May 9.

Sherwood was treated in hospital for a gunshot wound to his arm. His condition was not life-threatening.

John Amey, who was in the car park of the Broadway pub at the time of the shooting, said: “I heard several bangs. At first I thought it was some sort of exercise.

“There were people in balaclavas and with machine guns.”

He said there was “a lot of noise, but at the same time it seemed very controlled”.

“After the shots they got a man out of the car and they had medics there straight away,” he said.

A woman was also inside the vehicle, She was not arrested.
