Yellow Buses has launched a new service in a bid to beat growing road congestion.

The company has acquired a former RAF Sea King HAR3 helicopter – call sign YA-01 – and converted it to passenger use.

Pre-bookings are now being taken for the first flights of Yellow Air which is due to launch later this month.

The former balloon site in Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens will act as a collection point for passengers.

They will then be taken to the end of Bournemouth’s Pier which will be converted into a helipad.

Initially up to 16 passengers can be accommodated in the helicopter, which has been painted in Yellow Buses’ iconic yellow paint.

Yellow Buses’ usual slogan – ‘Filling your community with colour’ – has been replaced by ‘Filling the sky with colour.’

Route ‘Flight 1a’ will link Bournemouth, Christchurch and New Milton with other services planned if passenger numbers take off.

David Squire, managing director (inset), said: “Road congestion is the bane of our lives.

“We had to do something about it.

“After putting our heads together we came up with the idea of Yellow Air.

“It’s a UK first for the bus sector and we think will be a huge success.”

Bus driver Ado Fas Pillory, who has transferred from road to air after training, said: “This is a very exciting career opportunity but I must keep my feet on the ground.

“Yellow Air also offers free wi-fly which, together with a great view, means we are offering a fantastic passenger experience.”

Pre-booking closes at midday today, April 1.
