DORSET'S top police officer has thanked a man who stepped in to help when a bus driver was allegedly assaulted in Poole last week – and invited him to apply for a job.

As reported, Niall Taylor confronted youths who allegedly assaulted and threatened a Morebus driver in Wimborne Road near the New Inn last Tuesday.

Shortly after defusing the incident, he acted once again when a resident was reportedly the victim of a threat.

Mr Taylor, an industrial roofer who has lived in Poole all his life, had been in the area to watch football at the pub when the incidents allegedly unfolded.

Now Chief Constable James Vaughan has taken to Twitter to commend the 26-year-old.

The officer said: "Thank you Niall, your brave actions are very much appreciated.

"Our local communities are always safer when we stand together against violence.

"By the way, did you know we are recruiting for regular officers and special constables? We need good people!"

  • Two youths aged 16 and 17, both of whom are from Bournemouth, and a 19-year-old man from Poole, have been charged with assault and a public order offence. They are all due to appear at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 5.
