THIS year’s Ride and Stride event for Dorset Historic Churches Trust (DHCT) raised almost £83,000.

Proceeds go towards maintaining the historic churches of the county, and have allowed DHCT to present more than £110,000 in grants during 2018 for leaking roofs, subsiding floors, failed boilers and a host of other projects.

The initiative, which takes place each September, is the main fundraiser for the trust and one of the largest single day sponsored events in Dorset.

Hundreds of people took part on foot, on bikes, horseback and this year even by tractor.

DHCT chairman Simon Pomeroy said: "This is a great community event, but one with a special and very important aim – to help maintain buildings which are at the heart of nearly every town and village in Dorset.

"We are absolutely delighted with the sum raised and thank all who took part for their remarkable contribution."
