DRIVERS from Christchurch are among the worst in Britain, according to new information released by the DVLA.

In total, 7.9 per cent of the town's motorists have points on their licence, putting Christchurch in the top five across the UK.

Despite the dubious accolade, the town comes well behind Blaby in Leicestershire, where some 39 per cent of motorists have penalty points on their driving licences.

It also trails Barrow-in Furness, Cumbria, where almost one in five - or 18.9 per cent - of drivers have points.

In total, 13,141 people in Christchurch have three points. A further 637 have six and five people have a whopping 12 points.

Across the rest of the county, the percentage of drivers who have points is:

  • 5.3 per cent in Poole, with 6,229 on three points, 1,408 on six points and 10 on 12 points
  • 5.4 per cent in Bournemouth, with 7,575 on three points, 2,001 on six points and 19 on 12 points
