STAFF working in main theatres at Poole Hospital are toasting two local businessmen who have donated and built them a new kitchen to use at break-times.

Before Terry Barents, from Barents Project Management in Poole, and Steve Ferris, from Steve Ferris Kitchens Ltd in Charminster, got on board, staff were making do with a tired old kitchen with 'rudimentary' worktops.

After being alerted to the situation by his wife, Linda, who is a theatre support worker, Terry said: “They were looking at getting a second hand set of cabinets in and I thought I could do better. I put my idea to Steve and he was more than happy to oblige.”

Between them, Terry and Steve donated all the fittings and fixtures, including units, sinks and worktops, as well as the labour to fit them over the course of a weekend in November, free of charge. Terry was helped by employee Steven Clarke, who donated his time too.

“I know from Linda that the theatre team works so hard, it was really nice to be able to use our skills, expertise and contacts to do something good for them,” said Terry.

Steve said: "My suppliers gave me extra discounts as they knew they would be going to a really good cause. The NHS is hard pressed and has helped me and my family over the years - this is just my way of giving something back.”

Lyndsey Townsend, operating department practitioner, said the area is now much more user-friendly and is well-used by staff.

“We’re really grateful to Terry and Steve for their generosity – the kitchen has made a real difference," she said.
