AN online appeal has been set up to buy a custom bike for a survivor of the 7/7 bombings who lost her left leg in the horrific attack.

Susan Greenwood, who now lives in Southbourne with her husband and children, was on her way to Great Ormond Street Hospital where she worked in the operating theatre when she was caught up in the incident on July 7, 2005.

Susan was travelling on the Tube between King’s Cross and Russell Square when suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay detonated his device, killing 27 people including himself.

She said: “I was about an hour later for work because I’d been on a course that day. I got on at Turnpike Lane. It was a really busy day, trains were cancelled and all sorts of things were going on and it was a really packed tube train. The bomber got on at King’s Cross and into the carriage that I was travelling on and it was probably a few yards or metres into the tunnel when the explosion went off. . I must have lost consciousness because I ended up on the floor and I don’t really remember how I ended up on the floor. When I came to, I knew what had happened, I knew there had been an explosion without any real explanation. I knew that my leg was badly damaged so I tourniqueted my leg and waited for those wonderful people to come and save us.”

She added: “I knew it wasn’t ever the end of the world losing a leg for me and I knew that I would be able to walk again. One of the bombing survivors calls it “life number two” and I think it’s probably a good explanation and it has become a ‘new normal’.”

Susan has taken on a number of challenges for charities and organisations including Oxfam and Disability SnowSport UK and completed the100km Trailwalker challenge.

Following an accident on a mountain bike, Susan was left with a nasty injury to what remains of her left leg and also has arthritis in her knee and a problem with her hip.

An online appeal has now been set up by Susan’s stepmother, Tina, to raise £7,500 for a custom bike which will help Susan when going uphill or during times of physical exertion. It will also mean Susan is able to ride with her family. Visit gofundme.com/4ng5rf-help-a-survivor
