A person has died after being hit by a train at Brockenhurst station.

All train lines between Southampton and Bournemouth were blocked for several hours following the incident.

Train services running through the two stations have been cancelled or revised.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Brockenhurst station at 5.34am this morning following a report a person had been struck by a train.

"Paramedics and colleagues from Hampshire Police also attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the person and the circumstances that led to their death."

A spokesperson for South Western Railway said: "We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Bournemouth and Southampton Central.

"Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident. In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.

"We are waiting for a specialist police unit to arrive on site and carry out necessary investigations before the line can be reopened.

"The earliest this is likely to be complete is 10:30, and until this time no trains will be running through the affected area.

"We have sourced some replacement road transport, however as this is coinciding with school runs we do not currently have as many coaches as we would like for all of our passengers.

"We will be working hard to obtain further transport and will provide any updates as and when they are available. We ask passengers to check before they travel.

Disruption is expected until at least 2pm. The lines are now open again.
