AN electrical fire caused a power outage in Wallisdown Road on Monday night.

Firefighters were called at around 7.20pm after a fire started in an underground link box near the junction of Sunnymoor Road.

Police officers were at the scene directing traffic, while the fire crew put out the fire.

Several homes were without power due to the incident. After the fire was extinguished, engineers were called to the scene to restore electricity to the area.

Residents reported seeing tall flames and lots of smoke emanating from the link box.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said a transformer caught fire.

Ross Millen, who was at the scene, was tweeting about the drama as it unfolded.

He said at one stage the flames were "soaring up as high as six feet tall".

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 9pm, and power was reportedly restored to homes at around midnight.

Temporary traffic lights were installed on Wallisdown Road so emergency works could be carried out.
