ONLINE entry for the 2019 Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride is now open.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Daily Echo-backed event, which has raised more than £1million for charity. The ride starts at Corfe Mullen Recreation Ground and includes four circular courses, a 38, 48, 63 and 100-mile route.

Ride organiser Peter Smith-Nicholls said: "We had great success with our 100-mile ride in 2018.

"Next year we would like to see even more taking part and would welcome anyone who would not normally ride this far to take on the challenge of riding an electric bike."

Primera Sports, which stocks the latest generation of electric bikes, announced its support for the 2019 Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride at its annual exhibition at the Bournemouth International Centre. The company has now supported the charity ride for the past 14 years.

Primera owner Bill Temple said: "The market for electric bikes is growing fast. It is a great thing as it opens up cycling to a whole new group of people."

In 1988, Peter and friend Peter Jameson, 25, cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End in under two weeks. Ian Coles, 18, was back-up driver and they raised £6,700, while Peter began to lay plans for a Dorset fundraiser.

"I dreamt up the idea on that bike ride,” he said.

"I suppose I didn’t think then that it would be kept going for 30 years. We took each year as it came and it’s gone from strength to strength."

The annual event now attracts more than 700 riders, and in 2012 the £1million raised milestone was reached.

Cyclists taking part in the ride, which is scheduled for Sunday, July 1, next year, enjoy full support as they pedal around Dorset.

The event has marshals, refreshments and bike mechanics.
