A SILENT soldier will be placed in Fordingbridge as part of the town’s events to mark Remembrance Day.

The four-metre high memorial will be situated on the terrace of The George pub between November 9 and 19.

The soldier will be taken down at the end of Fordwick, the town’s memorial of a 1918 village constructed in St Mary’s Church.

Nicky Jenkins, Chair of the Fordingbridge Events Group, said: “As a group of local residents, we felt it was important to acknowledge not only the final year of the World War One centenary but also to remember all those who served, who were injured or sacrificed their lives in all subsequent conflicts. Our Remembrance soldier is our way of paying our respects but is also a visual reminder to the community of the importance of passing our history on to future generations.”

An air raid siren will be sounded in Fordingbridge at around 10.10am and again at 10.50am on November 11.
