POLICE are calling for the closure of two Bournemouth off-licences that they believe are "seriously undermining" their efforts to fight crime.

Officers want the two stores to lose their alcohol licences, claiming they have sold alcohol to under-age children and are at the centre of serious antisocial behaviour.

The news coincides with Gordon Brown's announcement to the Labour conference in Bournemouth that he would not tolerate shops fuelling teenage binge-drinking.

The Prime Minister said: "Let me tell the shops that repeatedly sell alcohol to those who are under age - we will take your licences away."

Premier Hillside Stores in Kinson Road and Ensbury Park Wines in Columbia Road will be hauled before Bournemouth council's licensing board on Friday, where councillors will hear evidence from both the police and the store owners.

The One Stop store in Jewell Road will also go before the licensing board, but police are recommending it has additional conditions put on its licence.

Premier Hillside Stores is accused of selling alcohol to children on three occasions - a 17-year-old and two 14-year-olds.

In a report to the licensing board, Dorset Police say the store has proved such a problem in the past, they resorted to stationing officers directly outside for six weeks.

Police claim the store often passes test purchasing exercises but only because it only sells to well-known local youths. They say there are reports the store inflates alcohol prices when selling to youngsters.

Residents have also told the police the store takes orders from underage youths in the week and delivers to them early on Friday nights.

Ensbury Park Wines is accused of selling alcohol to children on two occasions - once to a 14-year-old and once to a 15-year-old.

And the One Stop store on the Townsend estate is said to have sold alcohol to a 15-year-old boy in a test purchasing exercise.

Police are recommending its CCTV system is upgraded and the store painted in anti-graffiti paint.
