A HIGH street building in Boscombe East is to be demolished.
Birchmere Limited has won consent to knock down the building at 1079-1083 Christchurch Road and build a new block, retaining the existing ground floor shop unit and adding four flats.
A council report by planning officer Colin Tebb says: "It is relatively safe to suggest that the existing premises here and flats behind appear tired and run down, with the windows and doors in need of repair, re-painting and a number of the windows to the rear of the building boarded up, with the ground floor flat presumably unoccupied.
"So, the poor state of repair of the building adds little to the architectural merits of Christchurch Road at this juncture."
Bournemouth Civic Society called the proposed block "a suitable replacement" saying: "the new structure would be designed in traditional, late nineteenth century retail/residential style".
Three parking spaces are planned.
