DOZENS of children were permanently excluded from Dorset schools last year.
According to figures published ahead of Dorset County Council’s safeguarding overview and scrutiny committee meeting later this week, 72 youngsters were removed from their schools.
While the majority of exclusions were for persistent disruptive behaviour, the report says that the number being punished for drug and alcohol issues is “growing”.
Most exclusions were for children in secondary school but 13 primary school children also received the punishment in the 2017/18 school year.
Fourteen permanent exclusions were rescinded following an independent review or by governors.
The same number of children were moved to new schools in order to avoid the “last resort” punishment.
