A FORMER Motocross rider paralysed in an accident four years ago has launched a fund raising appeal to buy a custom-built, lightweight wheelchair.

Dad-of-two Lee Bosley was left paralysed from the waist down after undergoing eight hours of spinal surgery where metal rods were inserted into his back.

They 29-year-old then had to find new ways to manage his life from a wheelchair with the support of his fiance, now wife, Amelia, and their daughter Evie.

In August this year they welcomed the latest addition to their family, baby Albie.

Lee, who lives in Verwood has now launched an appeal to help him fund a new custom built, lightweight wheelchair which he believes will have a positive impact on his life.

He said: "It's not something you really think about, especially as I was a physically active bloke, busy as a self-employed plasterer and enjoying football and the gym. Then, suddenly, wham, everything changed in an instant.

"I have received wonderful support from the NHS, but they can only provide you with a wheelchair they have in stock, so I used my savings to buy one that was a bit better, but now four years on I need a new chair which will cost around £4,000 which I simply can't afford."

Lee's physio recommended that he considered getting a custom built, lightweight chair which will not only be easier to manoeuvre and get in and out of his mobility car, but with bespoke measurements should help prevent some of the considerable pain and discomfort he currently suffers.

Lee added:"My family and friends have been wonderful, coming up with some fundraising ideas, and suggested we open a Just Giving page. My aim is to become a bit more comfortable and mobile and participate in Paralympic sport, as well as do some volunteering work that I hope might lead into employment.

"We have been genuinely touched by people's generosity which will have an amazing impact on my life. There are some really nice people in this world, but you mainly only get to hear about the bad stuff. It restores your faith."

Lee's appeal is almost half way to its £4,000 target due to a number of fund raising activities. Anyone who wishes to donate can do so at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/lee-bosleywheelchairfund
