PROPOSALS to demolish an eyesore derelict car showroom in Pimperne and replace it with much-needed homes have been given the thumbs-up by North Dorset planners - as long as low cost housing is included.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the council's development control committee had been concerned about the planning application over fears of flooding, increased traffic and the belief it would be out of keeping with the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

But following discussions at the meeting, where members heard that a flood risk assessment had been carried out and the proposals for the site were the best submitted so far, the bid from Bayview Developments was given full planning permission.

They were also told that award-winning architects were involved in the design of the scheme and the number of affordable homes proposed had been agreed following discussions with council housing chiefs.

"The development would have social and planning benefits and would improve the character and appearance of the Area of Outstanding Natural beauty," said a council spokesman.

The plot in Salisbury Road is currently covered with the former Westover Sports Car showroom, which has been boarded up for the past five years.

Bayview wants to erect 12 houses and three flats with associated car parking and garages, and create a new vehicular access.

Vice chair of the parish council, Cllr Michael Oliver, told planners that parish councillors had no objections to the scheme and described the site in its current state as an eyesore.

He said he also felt that the scheme represented the most suitable of the three proposals submitted in recent years.

Planning permission has been given subject to a legal agreement to secure five units of affordable housing, as well as the developer making a contribution to the community infrastructure.

Additional conditions including tree planting and footpaths between the new homes were also imposed.
