A COUNCILLOR has called for Bournemouth's schools to do more to litter picking.

Speaking at a recent meeting, Boscombe West councillor Philip Stanley-Watts said: "A former minister wants litter picking to be included on the national curriculum to tackle waste and encourage social responsibility.

"Can we urge this in the Borough’s schools?"

However Cllr Nicola Greene, cabinet member for education and children's services, said the problems of litter and waste were already taught in the borough's schools.

"Litter and waste are included as part of the national curriculum for both primary and secondary schools," she said.

"All Bournemouth schools are eco schools as part of the global scheme. Many have already achieved the ‘green flag’ award.

"Ensuring a litter-free environment and local community is one specific element of the green flag award and many of our local schools engage enthusiastically, as indeed do many council members."
