I READ with sadness in Friday's Echo (11/5/18) that the pavilion at Swan Green was to be demolished and that cricket had not been played there since 2014.
I remember with great fondness of playing there many times in the 1960s and 70s as a visitor playing for Redlynch. We always played our away game there in August, and besides the usual spectators, endured many comments from passing cars which were held up in traffic approaching Lyndhurst.
The club was organised in those days by a great cricket character called Charlie Warwick, who continued playing into his 70s. This was in the days when many clubs played friendly cricket. Now most cricket in played in leagues and many clubs, I suspect that Swan Green is one, find it difficult to attract players.
I do hope that families will play a game of cricket on the ground from time to time, perhaps with tennis balls, and get youngsters interested in the game.
