SHE'S travelled more than 157,000 miles to get there, taught 5,760 children and given 1,872 assemblies.

But Jane Ashenden has finally decided to take things easy and has retired from the position of head teacher at Christchurch Infant School.

Deputy head Matthew Bowen has calculated some fascinating facts about Mrs Ashenden's 16 years at the helm.

She has worked 624 weeks - 4,368 days - has spent 5,096 hours in the car travelling to and from work and has handed out a staggering 14,976 Fab Friday stickers, given to children on Fridays for achievements during the week.

On the last day of term an emotional Mrs Ashenden was treated to a special assembly to mark her retirement.

During the whole school gathering, youngsters in all the different year groups performed poems, songs and stories.

Mrs Ashenden moved to Christchurch Infant School in Addiscombe Road in 2002 after spending five years as head teacher of St John's in Wimborne.

She told the Daily Echo: "I am feeling quite emotional because the staff are such a lovely group and the children are wonderful.

"This is a great school to be part of and I have worked with a great team.

"It has been a privilege to be part of this school community - it is a very special place."

Mrs Ashenden said she now plans to spend more time with her family, including her granddaughter, Olivia.

She added: "I am excited about retirement. It's going to be great to spend more time with my family and to find out what goes on outside the world of education."

Teaching Assistant Linda Middleton added: "I don’t think I know anybody who works the hours Mrs Ashenden does - double a standard working week. Truly she really deserves this."
