NEW Forest District Council is holding a by-election following the death of former cabinet member Sophie Beeton.

The 46-year-old Conservative, who represented Milford-on-Sea, died in January after a year-long battle with cancer.

Following her diagnosis she had treatment at Southampton General Hospital before going into St George’s Hospital at Milford-on-Sea.

She was first elected to the council in 2012 and was cabinet member for environment before stepping down towards the end of last year.

Three people will contest the by-election on April 5.

Cllr Beeton was also a member of Milford Parish Council but her place on that authority will be filled by co-operation as a by-election has been requested by the required number of people.

Her death caused sadness on both sides of the council chamber. The council lowered its flag as a mark of respect.
