A D-DAY veteran is to be given a fitting funeral.

Ted Young landed on Juno Beach with the 3rd Canadians on June 6, 1944, and built landing strips for Canadian Spitfires under enemy fire.

He died last month, aged 94, and his family launched a fundraising campaign to give him a funeral befitting a hero.

His funeral will be held at on Monday, March 26, at 1.15pm at St Clement’s Church, Parkstone.

There will then be a cremation at Poole Crematorium at 2.30pm, followed by a gathering at the Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, at 3.15pm.

His daughter Irene Richards said: “Everyone is welcome to attend and give dad the send-off he so richly deserves. Medals may be worn.”

In keeping with Ted’s wishes, there will be no flowers, but donations are welcome to either Veterans Bereavement Support or the Bournemouth Hospital Dementia Friendly Ward Appeal.

Colchester-born Ted tried joining the army by lying about his age when he was 15. He lied again when he was 17, claiming to be 19 and joining the Royal Engineers.

After the war, he worked for many years with construction company JL Keir. He moved to Parkstone after being widowed in 1987.
