WOULD-BE travellers looking for cheap flights abroad are being targeted by conmen, fraud campaigners have warned.

Victims have reported booking flights via websites or ticket brokers, only to discover that after payment via bank transfer or electronic wire, the tickets are counterfeit.

In some cases, all communications between the company or broker and the victim have been cut.

Fraudsters are targeting those seeking to travel to countries in Africa and the Middle East, and particularly those booking to travel in time for public and religious holidays.

A spokesperson from Action Fraud said: "Paying by direct bank transfer is like paying by cash – the money is very difficult to trace and is not refundable.

"Wherever possible, pay by credit card or a debit card."

Travellers are also urged to research companies and look through websites thoroughly, avoiding any sites which only offer a PO Box address and a mobile phone number. Companies should be members of a recognised trade body such as ABTA or ATOL.
