Peter Sykes said the area shown in the Tuckton postcard printed on August 13 was originally known as Tuckton Creeks and had its first business in the early 1900s offering boat trips to and from Mudeford, along with light luncheons and other refreshments on the upper deck of a vessel beached nearby.
The business was operated by William Nutter-Scott and his Armenian wife.
After a number of deaths from boats sinking everything was assigned to Messrs Newlyn & Ball in 1919.
They renamed it 'Tuckton Tea Gardens', erected the pavilion and were noted for a range of rowing boats, punts and canoes drawn up on the river bank.
