I KNOW the public toilet subject has been much discussed in the Echo and I have had a couple of letters published but I thought my recent experience would be of interest – particularly to Poole council.
I have just returned from a holiday travelling the Med, visiting Spain, Malta, Sicily and Italy.
In all those countries public toilets were readily available, well signposted and (mostly) clean.
The key was that they were all chargeable, either manned or automatic, with the charge being mainly 50c or, in the hot tourist spots, 1 Euro.
Applied here this would certainly help the funding problems for keeping our toilets open as this has to be better than having them closed.
In some places, all cafés, bars and restaurants were also legally obliged to provide toilet facilities for the public.
Incidentally, in all places visited there was very little begging, sleeping rough or street drunken behaviour.
