IN a town that is trying to maintain and increase its attraction to tourists, you have to put your money where your mouth is.
One council that seems to have done this is Allerdale – covering the tourist reliant areas of the Lake District.
They are presumably facing the same financial challenges as every other council but realise that their economy is, at least partially, dependant on visitors who arrive in an unknown area, maybe after a long journey and the first thing they do after parking or arriving at the travel interchange is look for a public toilet sign.
Isn’t that what most of us do when we are away from home?
A community toilet scheme is fine if (a) you know which businesses are included, (b) know where they actually are and (c) their opening times.
I am sure there are many locals who couldn’t answer these questions. What hope do visitors have?
