MUTTS, hounds and other canines of all shapes and sizes enjoyed a special trip around Moors Valley Country Park yesterday.

The animals and their owners were taking part in the RSPCA Big Walkies event, raising funds and awareness in this case for the nearby Ashley Heath Animal Centre.

The event, sponsored by Vitality, saw some 200 people take part, choosing from either a 3.5k or 5k route around the lake. Participants paid £10 to take part but many have also raised additional money through sponsorship.

Deputy manager at the Ashley Heath Animal Centre Gaynor Cannings said: "This is a great opportunity for the community to come together to get behind a good cause.

"We are a nation of animal lovers and this is a great opportunity to make lots of new doggy friends – and human ones too."

In May this year, 2,000 dogs and nearly 6,000 people enjoyed four flagship Big Walkies at Bournemouth, Alexandra Palace, Crystal Palace and Cardiff.

All the money raised will go to the charity, which is the oldest and largest animal welfare organisation in the world, with almost 2,000 employees.

The centre, in Horton Road, is also seeking more people to rehome its rescued dogs. If you can help call 0300 123 0749.
