UNINSURED vet owners squander over £678m each year in vet bills.

A new YouGov survey commissioned by pet insurance technology expert Aquarium Software indicates uninsured pet owners could be spending £1.8m every day in veterinary fees.

Almost half of households in Britain have a pet, but over half of these (57%) do not have any pet insurance.

Mark Colonnese, of Aquarium Software, said: “Many pet owners can be lulled into a false sense of security; their pets seem healthy and well, and so the cost of insurance seems avoidable. However, pets do sadly become ill or injured unexpectedly, and while there are often excellent veterinary treatments available, they can come at a significant cost.”

He cited recent cases highlighting just how costly veterinary care can be including one pet owner whose Labrador swallowed a pool ball, with treatment costing £1,200.

And a goldfish owner paid £300 in vets’ fees to cure his pet’s constipation.
