THREE quarters through my year as president, I reflect on success so far, measured as "the achievement of things aimed for".

Naturally, as an office bearer I had views. My Way Forward' document presented at the beginning of my year was a combination of identifying the issues, focusing on the structure of the chamber and future strategies.

A process of discussion - working with chief executive Peter Scott, the board and the council - has seen a translation into actions and the development of a realistic three-year plan.

I would expect future presidents to have a similar Way Forward document outlining issues as they see them.

This year has seen positive growth with Dorset Business significantly improving its delivery to members at every level.

Under our management the now very successful Dorset Business Awards have grown and are testimony to this new focus and success.

This change is also about meeting the needs of our members of all sizes, opportunities to develop new business, raising profile - whatever it might be, but success, as they measure it.

As we move forward, we are focusing on training and business development with Dorset Business in a unique position to provide this service.

I am passionate about sensible fair regulation that maintains a reasonable balance for business and statutory rights. My campaign for a "Better Deal for Business" has gone right up to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor.

Although success is a word that means different things to different people, we should all aspire to it and have some means of measuring it.
