Pirate Ship Quintet, Mr Kyps, Lower Parkstone

FOUR tracks in the entire set describe how epic Pirate Ship Quintet are. Despite the name, five instrumental members - including a BSO cellist - add layer upon layer of sounds resulting in a massive crescendo of intelligent post-rock.

The songs begin discreetly, slowly and quietly. Minutes of sounding like Sigur Ros take a Mogwai turn as the stage explodes with a brash barrage of intelligent noise, similar to the big sound of Arcade Fire.

Just when it seems a Pirate Ship Quintet track has finished, yet more dimensions are added. Most noticeably, the brilliant cellist brings a calming yet powerful feel back to a track with long, deep notes that bind the songs together.

This is like the next chapter in a Pirate Ship Quintet song. This time around, anticipation is heightened toward the huge climax of each song, which once included guitarist Terrance Smith screaming vocals from the microphone-less stage.

It is pleasing to see a band from Bournemouth unafraid of achieving post-rock music that has more of the feel, structure and techniques of an orchestra. Two of tonight's tracks are taken from this fascinating live band's forthcoming EP.
