A “VISUAL transformation” of Bournemouth’s Pier Approach is well underway, with a £4million revamp due to be completed for the summer.

The eye-catching giant steel “leaves” which will form part of a new visitor information building, give residents a taste of the style the council is hoping for.

The Pier Approach was earmarked as a priority site in Bournemouth council’s 20-year seafront plan, because of the sheer number of people that pass through that area every year.

The idea is to create a grand gateway from the historic Lower Gardens to the sea, enhanced by elegant lighting.

The Pier Approach itself will be cleared of all fairground rides except for a Victorian-themed carousel but will include new water play features and sympathetic landscaping.

Colourful light displays in the evening will encourage visitors to stay for longer and make the entrance to Bournemouth’s seafront an attraction in its own right.

Cllr Lawrence Williams, cabinet member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “We are delighted that work is progressing on site at Pier Approach as the visual transformation begins to take shape.

“Creating a world-class gateway to the seafront from the gardens will help establish Bournemouth’s position as Britain’s premier destination for holiday-makers.

“We want to attract new visitors and encourage residents and their families to spend more time here and enjoy Bournemouth’s award-winning gardens, parks and beaches.”
