Students from two Bournemouth colleges showed their business talent in a week-long set of challenges – culminating in a Dragons’ Den style pitch.

The students from Avonbourne and Harewood were hoping their business ideas, inspired by the subjects they were learning, would impress the judges to win a £200 investment.

And three teams were selected at the end of the challenge by the judges, all LV= executives.

The fun challenge was set as part of a special Global Entrepreneurship and Employability (GEE) week held at each college for students in Years 7 and 8.

Executive headteacher of both colleges, Debbie Godfrey-Phaure, said: “As a Business and Enterprise Trust our colleges are very much about preparing our students for employment by bringing out the entrepreneur in them all. Our GEE weeks are a very fun way of linking core subjects with the business world to show how learning maths, science, English, history and the languages relate to the real world.’”

For Avonbourne, the judges could not decide between the Geography and French teams so gave them each the top prize.

The Geography girls won for their ‘Shining Stars’ business which proposed a new renewable energy source for shops in Africa.

Joint winners from the French class impressed with their eye-catching educational business ‘Bonjour Beads.’ The French-themed beads were made into a range of products, including bracelets and necklaces, and were accompanied by an Anglo-French leaflet explaining their meaning.

At Harewood, a team of three boys from Science were voted the overall winners with their Mr Bizzies Fizzies.

The boys produced and tested their own bath bombs, which not only smelled of lovely flowers, but also changed the colour of the water.

The winning teams will now invest their money into further developing their business ideas.
