A DORSET road has now reopened after a major thatch blaze in the north of the county.

More than 60 firefighters tackled the major fire which shut the A350 at Fontmell Magna on Wednesday.

A vigilant neighbour spotted smoke coming from a thatched property and called for the fire service.

Fire engines from Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton and Blandford were initially sent but requested the help of three further crews as the roof was well alight. A water carrier was also requested from Poole.

Firefighters set to work extinguishing the blaze using main lines, hose reels and a compressed air foam line, working to create a fire break in the thatch.

Two further fire engines were requested and these proceeded with standby crews already in the area, sent from Sherborne and Wimborne stations.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire. The roof and first floor of the property were 'severely damaged', he said.

Approximately 62 firefighters attended the incident. The Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support team attended to offer support to those affected.

Dorset Police have put several road closures in place in Fontmell Magna while the fire is being extinguished:

  • Royal Chase Roundabout southbound
  • A350 north of North Street
  • West Street
  • Mill Street
  • Durweston Bridge is closed and a diversion is in place for heavy goods vehicles

They are advising motorists to avoid the area.
