POOLE'S Twin Sails Bridge was stuck in the upright position for much of the weekend, after suffering ‘mechanical issues’ on Friday afternoon.
Traffic built up in the area on Saturday lunchtime, as at that time Borough of Poole had not put out ‘road closed’ signs.
However, by yesterday morning road closures had been implemented on both of the bridge approaches.
It is expected to reopen later this morning after emergency repairs
On Friday motorists said the bridge remained half-open on two occasions, making it temporarily unavailable for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
A Borough of Poole spokesman confirmed there was an issue, but they insisted engineers were working to resolve it as soon as possible.
On Friday, Borough of Poole engineering manager John Rice said: “The cause is being investigated and arrangements are in place to ensure the bridge remains operational over the weekend until the fault can be fully rectified.”
