FORD has announced details of the new version of its best-selling Focus.

It has been redesigned, with a bolder exterior, and is set to feature a range of new tech, as well as improvements to fuel economy.

On sale in the second half of this year, it will herald the European debut of Ford’s latest in-car connectivity system, SYNC 2, as well as the new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and TDCi diesel.

Odell, president of Ford of Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “We weren’t satisfied with being number one; we wanted to blow people away with a stunning new version of the Focus.

“New Focus marries modern design, advanced technology and leading fuel efficiency with the fun-to-drive DNA for which Focus is rightly acclaimed.”

Looks-wise, the exterior moves the Focus in line with the latest versions of the Mondeo and Fiesta and there will be new colours as well.

Ford is promising a more intuitive interior, with fewer controls and switches for a cleaner look.

A quieter ride, thanks to thicker carpets, thicker side window glass and better engine insulation, is promised.

The SYNC 2 system will include an eight-inch colour touchscreen and improved voice control.

Driving-wise, Ford has increased structural stiffness for a more solid and responsive drive and to make the driver feel “more connected to the road”.

Another first being claimed by Ford is Perpendicular Parking. Where the last incarnation could parallel-park for you, the new Focus will be able to reverse into spaces.

It will also alert driver if a vehicle is likely to be crossing behind them when they move out of a parking space.

Other innovations include distance alert, which enables drivers to set a preferred distance that they would like to keep to the vehicle ahead.

Parents will also be impressed – for the first time, the car’s key will be able to be programmed to limit top speed, the volume of the audio system and can disable the car altogether if seat belts are not being used.

The last version of the Focus blew many away with its 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, and the new model will be the first in Europe to get the 150ps and 180ps 1.5-litre EcoBoost engines, alongside a new 1.5-litre diesel.

There will also be a new version of the 1.0-litre engine.

Although it has yet to reveal figures, Ford is promising fuel economy improvements across the range.
