IT’S quite easy, given the success of staples like the Fiesta and Focus, to forget that Ford does a few other decent motors.

One of them is the Kuga SUV, which, in its latest form, is a good-looking car in its own right, and highly-capable.

All trims get decent spec, with the base Zetec giving you alloy wheels, twin exhaust pipes, hill hold and cruise control among its features, while inside you’ve got DAB radio, Ford Sync voice control and air con.

I drove mid-range Titanium, which adds flashier alloys, auto lights and wipers, an uprated Sony stereo system, hi-res displays, dual-zone air con and part-leather trim.

So inside is a comfortable place to be, with a raised driving position, decent rear space and, as you’d expect, a large boot.

That makes it a good family car that can also tackle a bit of off-road adventure if you fancy it.

The driving experience is decent, with good handling, a tight, light gear change and, with the 2.0 diesel, plenty of perk.

There are two engine options on this trim and the diesel, which can be had in 140ps or 163ps flavour, seems the better option compared to the 1.6 petrol.

It’s cleaner, at 139g/km, and leaner, with 53mpg on the combined cycle and the price difference isn’t huge.

Moving up the range, extras include bigger alloys, a panoramic roof, power tailgate, and, on the top-spec X Sport, a body-styling kit that adds to the rugged looks.

Top-spec also gets active park assist and roof rails.

For the most adventurous families, that might well be the one to go for, a true all rounder for sure.

But, whichever model you find yourself with, you’ll be getting a well-specced, highly-capable car – comfortable on the road, capable off it and well-equipped for lugging the family and everything that they come with.

Prices start at £20,995, with the AWD model tested here at £26,045.

Top-end X Sport diesel automatic is £33,245.
