An art mural will be created on one wall of the Wessex Way alleyway, located at the end of Lowther Road in Charminster, following a series of events that have taken place there.

The art mural will be created by Ilse Black, a Bournemouth based spatial intervention artist, and will be digitally created to include a number of paintings by local school children.

Caroline Rackham, correspondent for Wave Arts Education, the company who have funded the mural, said: “It’s a chance for more children to be involved and think differently about the subway.”

The previous events in the alleyway included: a Carol Concert – held on Wednesday 18th 2013 – and football matches – held on Tuesday 25th children from Malmesbury Park and Bethany School.

Organised by Architecture Students from The Arts University Bournemouth and visiting lecturer Richard Eastham, the events were aimed at improving the local community’s perception of the cut through, before the art mural is created.

Richard Eastham, the project leader, said: “Rather than walking through [the alleyway] parents will drive the long way round to take their children to school… but we want the community to think of it as their own space.”

Both events seemed to be a huge success, with Sam Fuller, Assistant Headteacher at Malmesbury Park Primary School, saying: “The children have transformed the place, it’s been full of energy and full of excitement, and quite a miraculous change, it’s been fantastic.”

There have been previous problems with graffiti and drugs in the alleyway, which have tainted locals view of the cut-through.

But Caroline Rackham said: “The alleyway had a bad reputation before but it is definitely getting a better one.”
