PIG’S eyeballs, brains, garden worms and live locusts were just some of the gruesome morsels served up at a popular Poole pub’s charity night.
Fifteen cast iron-bellied contestants took part in the bush tucker inspired eating contest, in aid of Dorset charity Diverse Abilities Plus.
The ‘What’s On My Plate, Get Me Out Of Here’ challenge took place at Ashley Road’s Victoria Cross pub on Friday evening.
Among the other stomach-churning delights was pig’s windpipe and a fish-gut milkshake.
Pub landlady Teresa Davies told the Daily Echo: “It was an amazing event, it went really well and we’ve raised at least £500.”
This total is likely to grow substantially after the collection boxes from the night are counted.
“All the insects were alive,” said Teresa.
“The winner was Dan Pearson, the runner-up was Sam Dilley and the person who raised the most money was Wes Vermaak.”
Six contestants managed all the rounds, so the contest had to be decided in an ‘eat-off’ which only Dan and Sam managed to complete.
“The decider was the first person to eat a whole lime, including the skin,” said Teresa.
“It’s really, really hard to eat a whole lime with the skin on.”
The item on the menu that did the most damage, with at least a couple of contestants failing to keep it down, was the pig’s brain.
Diverse Abilities Plus, which runs Poole’s Langside School, works to support people with physical and profound learning disabilities.
Teresa said: “I’d like to thank everyone who supported and helped make the event such a success.”
The insects were provided by Save Haven Exotics, a reptile rescue centre on Ashley Road, Poole.
