WORK to revamp one of Christchurch's busiest road junctions will begin on Monday.
Dorset County Council says it is changing the lay-out of the Stony Lane/Purewell junction on Bridge Street to improve safety and make it easier for residents to walk or cycle around the town.
The project includes the installation of pedestrian crossings on all four approaches to the junction, the removal of existing traffic islands and the creation of an additional lane on the southern end of Stony Lane.
The upgrade should take around five weeks to complete. Dorset County Council says to minimise disruption, the work has been programmed to coincide with Southern Gas Network's replacement of a gas main in the town centre. During this period Castle Street will be closed at its junction with the High Street.
A diversion route will be in place and four-way temporary traffic signals will be used throughout the construction to manage traffic flow.
The scheme will cost around £175,000 and is part of the Three Towns Travel project, a package of transport improvements which aim to promote walking, cycling and use of public transport around Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole.
