TOP cyclists reaching speeds of around 30 miles per hour will race through Bournemouth town centre this Saturday for the Sky Ride.

It is predicted that thousands will line the streets to watch elite sportsmen at the top of their game complete a lap of the streets, closed specially to motorists for the event.

The thrilling high-speed dash will take place from 6.30pm after a day of family-friendly two-wheeled fun.

Richard Dickson, technical director of Full Force Events, has organised the circuit racing event.

He said: “I think the cyclists could hit a top speed of about 28mph.

“That’s why cycling is such a great spectacle. It’s a bit gladiatorial – there’s no engine there. The bike is propelled through muscle power. Imagine trying to sprint for an hour – what’s what these cyclists will essentially be doing. It’s very dramatic, exciting stuff.”

There will be three categories in the circuit racing event – amateur racers with a category of three to four, corporate teams, and elite cyclists with a category of one to two.

Competitors will take on a lap of the town covering a little under a mile, from Westover Road through Bath Road via Gervis Place and Exeter Road and then back to the start.

It is expected that the top cyclists will ride around 30 laps of the circuit.

Richard, who was previously head of security for road races at the Olympics, said: “It’s going to be a great event.

“As well as the cycling, there will be entertainment and music. The idea is to create a fun, family-friendly atmosphere so that people want to get involved, come down to the town and take part. These guys will get to ride a professional circuit in the heart of Bournemouth. It’s going to be a fantastic evening.”
