ONE of the have-a-go-heroes who helped apprehend a driver who allegedly left a trail of devastation across Poole has spoken of the drama.

As reported in the Daily Echo yesterday, a silver Vauxhall Vectra was seen skidding to avoid other cars around rush hour time on Wednesday.

Police said that the car was involved in a number of fail-to-stop collisions in West Street, Crest Road and Mansfield Road, with officers first being notified at around 4.30pm, before it was seen in Poole Park.

A spokesman said that the car collided with another vehicle on Seldown Bridge before hitting a traffic island at the Newfoundland Roundabout.

Michelle Bailey, who lives in Vallis Close, near where the car crashed, gave chase with her neighbour.

Catering manager Michelle, 37, said: “We heard the bang and screech and the crash.

“I went running out and saw the car. As I came out the chap who crashed the car came past me.

“I had another neighbour with me. We ran after him and followed him to around the back of Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

“We saw another man, who pushed him down to the floor and he sat on him until the police got there. The police were there within minutes, it was fantastic.”

She said another neighbour went to the car and switched the engine off.

David Finnemore, from Poole, had seen the car in Poole Park minutes earlier.

He said: “It was skidding around with people coming the other way. There were squealing tyres and burning rubber. He ran off on foot and there were a lot of people standing around watching.”

The driver, a 24-year-old man from Poole, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

Nobody was injured during the drama.

Any witnesses should call police on 101, quoting reference number 19:384.
