MUSIC lovers are set to be in a spin over an event to celebrate record shops. Record Store Day on Saturday sees independently-owned record shops join forces with artists to celebrate music. As well as musicians and DJs performing, there are giveaways and promotions of collectable and rare records.

Last year 200 stores staged more than 200 events on the day and 2013 promises to be even bigger. With more people downloading music from the internet, traders say it is vitally important to promote shops selling records.

Among the stores supporting the event in the area are Flat 13 in Bournemouth, Rose Red Records in Boscombe and Square Records in Wimborne.

Artists taking part in the fourth national annual event include David Bowie, Kate Bush, Paul Weller, pictured, Pink Floyd and Paul McCartney and Wings. The day will see an array of vinyl rarities such as picture discs, pink vinyl and oddities for sale.

According to Paul Holman owner of Square Records, the annual celebration of all things vinyl has become the biggest day of the year for his independent shop and he expects business to be brisk.

He said: “It started in 2007 and this day is now the biggest date in our calendar. This year is set to be bigger than ever.

“It's a day where exclusive limited edition releases can only be bought from the stores taking part and last year we had people queuing through the night to get to the event!”

At Square Records there will be live performances in store from local artists Roo Panes, Scott McKeon and Carys Lowry-Carter. Meanwhile, Boscombe’s Rose Red Records has specially redecorated the shop and will boast performances from local musicians With.a.love.like.this., Douglas Firs and Galahad.
