TWO months after the close of the Olympics, the Ferndown Jitsu Club is still blazing a trail with a torch belonging to a very famous footballer.

The club, which has almost 100 young members, made a visit to the town’s Sainsbury’s to hold a torch owned by David Beckham.

John Hanrahan, who runs the popular martial arts club, said it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for members.

“We ended up with a torch David Beckham had,” he said.

“It’s also been included in a photo shoot with the Queen, so it was very exciting for all of us.”

Many of the club’s members wenr along to take part in the experience.

Mr Hanrahan said: “As a group, we really enjoyed the Olympics this summer. We even made a full-size Usain Bolt out of papier-mâche, which was displayed in Ferndown Leisure Centre.”

The group also made a 3D model of East Dorset athlete Charles Bennett, winner of the 1500 metres at the 1900 summer Olympics, and the first British track and field athlete to become an Olympic champion.

Both models have now moved to the Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne High Street.

Assistant curator James Webb said: “We have Charles Bennett on display, and Usain is in the shop downstairs.

“They will both be with us until November 3, when we close the museum to the general public for the winter.”

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday, 10am until 4.30pm.
