THE night before New Year’s Eve is not usually considered one of the best nights of the year to go out.

But having arranged to meet friends from Salisbury for a meal, so it was that we found ourselves at the Tudor Rose Inn.

Considering the date, I was surprised at the amount of people in the pub – definitely a sign of a popular haunt – which gave it a pleasant jovial atmosphere we hadn’t been expecting.

Dishes on offer reflect the pub’s traditional English feel.

Both couples selected a sharing plate of nachos, which arrived smothered in delicious melted cheddar cheese.

A very generous portion, but could have done with a touch more sour cream and salsa for dipping.

Mains on offer included real winter warmers such as chicken and ham pie, lasagne and macaroni cheese and there was a vegetarian selection including chilli and a veggie lasagne.

I opted for locally produced sausages and mash, our friend chose chicken curry and the men opted for an 8oz rump steak each, from the “two for one” selection on offer.

Our food was quick to arrive and extremely hot.

My tasty sausages had a light minty tang and the gravy was rich and thick – just how I like it, accompanied by peas, onions, mash which was slightly too peppery for my liking, and, rather bizarrely, a lone parsnip, a couple of carrot slices and a couple of brococli florets. Tasty none the less!

The curry was delicious with tender meat and a wealth of light, fluffy rice and the steaks also went down very well.

Both were cooked to perfection and the accompanying chips were crisp and fluffy inside without being too greasy, although the onion rings were slightly soggy.

We all pronounced oursleves too full for desserts, but a selection of specials included more old favourites such as apple pie and cream and a sticky toffee pudding.

Our meal for four came to £98.45 including five soft drinks and several pints for the men!

A friendly ambience and fantastic comfort food for a cold winter’s night. Well recommended.
