I’d driven past this recently opened restaurant, just outside Poole’s town centre, on a number of occasions and had been highly intrigued. So one evening I decided to head over to Poole and put it to the test.

Parking just outside Poole Park and walking the few hundred yards to the restaurant wasn’t ideal, but due to the restaurant’s location there isn’t scope for parking any closer.

It was all a bit awkward when we entered the restaurant as it wasn’t clear whether you had to wait to be seated, should just take a table and wait to be waited on, or whether you had to order at the bar. After standing around for a minute we opted for the latter and ordered some drinks at the bar then sat at our choice of table – which was vast, as there was only one other occupied table in the restaurant.

My first impressions of Atlantic were that it is definitely more of a bar that serves food than a restaurant, as I had initially thought.

On the night my guest and I visited they had just experienced a busy lunchtime period and we were informed that they were out of all but one or two of the burgers, the steaks and the nachos on the menu.

With our options limited I decided on the Chill Con Carne Calzone pizza (£9.95) and my guest went for the ½ lb Atlantic Burger (£7.95).

I’ll say one thing for Atlantic, you cannot accuse them of skimping on the portions.

My Calzone looked like a loaf of bread and my guest’s burger and thick cut chips meant neither of us needed to look at the dessert menu after.

Fully packed with chilli beef, pepperoni, mozzarella and Cheddar, I was highly impressed with my unique calzone and I was also very impressed with what I was allowed to try of the burger on the other side of the table.

I will pay another visit to Atlantic as I don’t think we caught them at their finest hour.

For the quality of the food and the size of the portions I would recommend it as a place to pop in for a lunchtime or early evening snack, but not as a venue for a proper sit down evening meal.

Our bill came to just under £25 for two drinks and two main courses.
