A Baleada is a speciality in Honduras and is basically a tortilla traditionally filled with refried beans, sour cream and grated cheese.

If you don't fancy making your own tortilla, you could always buy them.

Baleada

2 cups of wheat flour

1 cup of water or tepid milk

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 cup oil

1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Knead the mixture until it is completely mixed and not sticky.

2. Form the dough into golfball size balls. Cover and let sit for about 20 minutes.

3. Take each ball of dough and stretch it on a flat surface to make a large tortilla. Should be thick.

4. Set the tortilla on a hot pan or grill until crisp. Turn the tortilla over and cook the other side.

Fillings:

Once the tortilla is ready you can fill it with anything you like. Traditionally in Honduras a baleada features mashed refried beans, sour cream, and grated cheese. But scrambled eggs, plantain, chicken, ground meat or sausage can also be added.
