As the General Election reaches fever pitch and voters are attracted by the X-Factor style hysteria surrounding TV performances by the party leaders, this historic three-horse race has all the ingredients for a Hollywood-style election night special.
And while few of us have much trust in politics and believe little of what’s being said, polls indicate supporters have been energised by the election campaign and a vast majority of the nation will be casting their vote on May 6 – and celebrating or commiserating with members of the Cabinet.
Fizzing with new ideas, several of the capital’s bars have devised quirky cocktails in honour of the general election and to correspond to one of the three major political parties – encouraging punters to vote with their mouths.
If you can’t race off to Hamptons Bar in Westminster to try one of its tongue-in-cheek cocktail recipes, here are my three favourite contenders for a taste of party politics.
Blue Murder
50ml gin
25ml Blue Curacao
25ml lime juice
Champagne
Twist of orange peel
Pour the first three ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Top with Champagne, garnish with orange peel.
Red Rascal
50ml Havana Club Rum
50ml cranberry juice
3 bar spoons of framboise
25ml raspberry purée
Twist of orange peel
Pour first four ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish with orange peel.
Liberal Minded
50ml vodka
3 bar spoons Galliano
75ml orange juice
25ml passion fruit purée
Pour the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass, no garnish.
