SITTING right on the busy Barrack Road and attached to a Premier Inn, the Bailey Bridge wouldn’t necessarily be your first choice for a meal out.

But you could do a lot worse than give it a try.

Recently taken over by the Table, Table chain, the pub/restaurant offers a cosy, relaxed atmosphere and an extensive menu to suit all tastes.

We visited early evening on a Friday to take advantage of the “two dine for £10” offer, available Monday to Friday from noon to 6.30pm, and found it pleasantly quiet.

As we had our two-year-old with us, we decided against starters, which included goat’s cheese and herb pastry parcels, yakitori sticky chicken skewers and pan-fried king prawns in garlic butter, as well as the more traditional garlic breaded mushrooms, soup and prawn cocktail.

There is also a sharing selection on offer including foot-long Italian flatbreads and a platter featuring a mix of various starters.

The “two for £10” selection was obviously not as extensive as the main menu but still offered a wide variety, such as Wiltshire cured ham and eggs, fish and chips, sweet potato and chickpea curry, chilli, and spinach and nutmeg soufflé tart.

I chose a grilled chicken Caesar salad while my husband opted for the 6oz British beef burger and chips, served with coleslaw and a sweet, smoky chilli sauce.

We ordered a child’s chicken nuggets with chips and peas from the children’s menu, which also featured an extensive selection including organic choices such as sausage and vegetable casserole or meatballs and pasta, with other mains of chicken dinner, spaghetti Bolognese, steak and chips and tuna pasta bake.

Our food was quick to arrive and the salad was a generous size with crispy lettuce, tender pieces of chicken and a tangy, tasty Caesar dressing. The burger was meaty, with the accompanying chips cooked to perfection.

The child’s meal was, again, a generous portion, with “proper” chicken in the nuggets rather than the processed variety, and a good helping of peas which went down a treat.

We helped our daughter with a plain vanilla ice cream for dessert. She pronounced it “lovely” and it certainly had a very creamy flavour.

All in all we enjoyed nice food at a very reasonable price in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our meal, including two pints of lager and two soft drinks, cost £22.48.
